FRIDAY APRIL 13 2018

Nothing unlucky happened today. We joined in the Hobbs family normal day with Aidan at home from work (paternity leave?).  Robyn flew in and Aidan brought her from the airport at 1pm.  She was excited to be able to hold Nathan for the first time.  He is quite active for a new born boy and always hungry.

We watched more of the Games and left for the Gold Coast at 4pm in Aidan's car.  He left his car at Brendon's place in Toowong and we took a train to Roma St and then another train to Nerang and a shuttle bus to Carrara Stadium.  There were big crowds at Nerang but plenty of coaches.  The one they put us on was from Townsville!  Many people walked along the wide footpath. All good.

At the stadium we bought fish and chips for $11.50, a coke for $5.50 and a water bottle for $3.50.  Pies were $5.50.  Not as bad as we feared.  We sat down at 7pm three rows back from the fence and the night began with medal ceremonies from the last events on Thursday.  Matthews received a bronze in the 1500 meters.

Semenya won the 800 meters easily.

We watched the Men's Discus and 3000 meter Steeplechase, which was of special interest to Aidan.  The Africans dominated that one.  The men's 10,000 meter (25 laps) was exciting and Aidan and Brendon were able to call out encouragement as the two Aussies ran past.

The highlight was the Women's Pole Vault which went on for about an hour with the field gradually narrowing to NZ, Canada and Oz.  The Games record was broken with NZ first and Australia third. It was just as suspenseful as the Men's Pole vault had been when Australia won gold. The crowd clapped and cheered or moaned on every jump.

The three of them came past us in a victory lap afterwards. Then a man appeared on the big screens and asked us to stand and throw our arms around in time to set a world record in something Malcolm and Lyn could not fathom, so we did not join in.  A silly end to a very enjoyable night.

We decided to walk back to the station and it was a wall to wall moving throng, but quite pleasant.  As we neared the station a line of coaches were filling up and one had a sign "Roma St", so we hopped on and got to the Brisbane station at midnight, faster than the train.  We found a 444 bus which took us back to Chapel Hill.  Aidan and Brendon got off at Coronation Parade and ran 800 meters to Brendon's place where Aidan drove his car home and beat the bus by a couple of minutes.  In bed at 1:15am and very happy with our excursion.
