SATURDAY APRIL 21 2018

The Westlander passed through Chinchilla just before dawn and that reminded us of our home (Jinchilla).  We got a chance to stretch the legs after breakfast.

When the train reached Toowoomba the track work was finished, but the Westlander descended into the valley very slowly; presumably testing out the new work on the tracks.  The rain forest was very impressive except where masses of lantana had taken over the cleared areas.

We got off at Roma St on time and we were well satisfied with our first experience of Charleville.  We bought some lunch from MacDonalds and bought the last Weekend Herald just before the Paper Shop closed at noon.  It did not take long to discover this page featuring Aidan as the long time mascot;

With two hours to fill before boarding the Spirit of Queensland, we decided to pull our luggage around the Roma Street Parkland,  which is just as enchanting as ever.  We managed to go right around the park without having to negotiate steps.  The waterfalls were everywhere and the biggest ones provided a cool spot:

The water dragons also reminded us of home.

The train left for Cairns at 4pm and we settled in to our "railbed" seats.  We had a great shower and turned on our entertainment screens to watch a movie.  The staff converted the seat to a bed at 8:30pm and we slept soundly.
