WEDNESDAY APRIL 18 2018

There were no sleeper berths on this train, just two seating carriages.  Since there were only 15 passengers (and 6 staff) the last carriage was kept empty.  We had the usual problems trying to sleep sitting up, plus Malcolm catches up with his breath as he gets drowsy with a snore/snort that alarms people nearby.  We were handed a plastic grocery bag with a "dinner" in it and we received a similar bag for breakfast at 7am.

After changing the staff at Roma, we were able to enjoy the Queensland outback scenery, watching the trees differ and the soil turn redder as we got further west.  We saw angus cattle and a goat farm.

At MItchell station we were able to walk along the platform for a few minutes.

We did the same at Morven, where the Matilda Way heads north to Longreach, and the train kept ahead of time till we arrived a few minutes early at Charleville Station. Our booked motel was The Rocks and was easily visible from the station exit.  Our room was as new and very good.

We slept for an hour or so then watched The Chaser at 3pm and wandered around the town centre, pausing at the muddy Warrego River.

At 7pm we had a great dinner at the motel restaurant called "On The Rocks".  Rack of lamb for Lyn and Lamb Shank Pie for Malcolm.  We declined the complimentary bottle of wine, so they gave a bottle of Norwegian spring water, which was perfect for us.  The local water is Artesian and smells like sulphur but is supposedly healthy.
